Hi, I am about to make an appointment to get my hair colored..my hairdresser talked to me about becoming what she calls a soft brown with a few highlights...where should i have them put the highlights in order to look natural and for the roots to not show so much as they grow? If you want it more natural looksing maybe just get a partial foil with foils in the top section and on the side and a couple in back. You should ask her to "weave" them instead of slicing because slicing will give you that stripe look and weaving is more natural, it blends a little better. Hope that helps.

if your hair is naturally blonde then you probably don't have much orange or red pigment for the tint to mix with... if you really want something natural choose a strawberry blonde tone...if you want something punchy use a copper tone

it is really difficult for natural lowlights to look good in light hair but it is possible

If you have really blond hair, the color may not have taken the way it should. I would suggest you go to your local salon. Some place that's aware of the new trends and knows how to deal with your hair. If you want a more natural look, you may want to try a stunning red (not plum or pink) with golden blond highlighs. you could use a darkening shampoo, because your hair is already black it won't make a difference. try john frieda or panteene expressions ...read the labels, there are different shades

I am trying to wash out the ash toner fro my bleached blonde highlights because it is grey. I am washing my hair twice a day with baby johnson and suave clarifying shampoo. the reason I had ash toner put in my hair was because some of the bleached highlights were orange. I have black hair, so now I have grey and brown in my hair. How can I get my blonde parts back in my hair and not the orange. Should I use a shampoo for blonde hair (though would it affect the other colors in my hair) or a plantinum toner (would that also affect the other colors in my hair?) please help. I am leaving for a trip tomorrow and want my hair to look beautiful. Is it okay to get a deep condition, hot oil treatment, an replenishing condition all in one week though not on the ame day?

HOW TO WASH OT ASH TONER FROM Hair that was bleached with blonde highlights?

You are wasting your time with shampooing. You can't correct perminent color by shampooing. Besides the toner may not be the problem.

You started at a level 1(black) and wanted your highlights to be a level 10 (very blonde). To do that you needed hair bleach and developer a volume 10 or even 20 volume.(because going from a 1 to a 10 you are removing all of the pigment in your hair. To avoid excessive damage you want to keep the bleach on the shortest possible time, while achieving your desired resault.

Working with color is tricky. You need to know your hair's porosity. You can have different degrees of porosity in different places. Previous chemical process (perms, relaxers, color) + other factores will also effect how the hair responds to bleach. Do a strand test to dertermine formula and processing time until you know how your hair responds.

But your beyond a strand test.

So how do you fix it? I would recemend going to a salon and having a trained professional fix it. But if you must do it yourself. Here's how.

I am going to guess the orange is primarily at the roots and top and maybe under the side of the head . It is orange because the bleach was not on long enough. (the techniqe for this process is to apply at roots first then bring down to the ends. Generly the mid-shaft and the ends will process faster then the roots. So timing will vary. That is how you fix the orange.

About the grey- either you used the wrong color toner or again the bleach was not on long enough. To check while the bleach is on. Use a water bottle and clean towel. Spray (rinse) a small area of a section and dap or squeeze out excess water (get it as dry as possibe with the towel or a paper towel works well) to check the true color.

Only once you have achieved the level of color you want then apply the toner for a richer,shinier finish. Keep in mind Ash (the true color) is just that- ashy. If you are going for a Platnium color use a platnium toner.

Whan your done-yes pamper your hair with apporioate treatments. You shoud also protect it! Use a spray leave in conditioner and add sunscreen to it. When you blow dry use a product to protect your hair from the heat- always use the lowest heat possible.

Well I have got the knack of dying my own hair now but had horrible outcome a couple of years back after trying a highlighting kit. The dye bit is easy but when it came to the highlights it's a lot more tricky. You are meant to pick out the desired 'chunks' you want to highlight by using the end of the slim handled comb supplied with the kit, but to do this on your own is quite difficult and i used my fingers instead so ended up choosing the width of my highlight chunks starting at the bottom so when i got to the top it was very thick chunks i had picked! LOL you have gloves on and the highlighting cream gets on bits you don't want it to go on . If though you are like me and once you get something in your head you have to do it, just remember to choose your chunk sizes from the top or get someone who may have an idea what look you want to achieve to help you and remember if it goes wrong you can always nip to the chemist and by an all over dye to cover it. good luck.

Red is notoriously hard to remove from hair as, like blond, it seeps into the hair and stays there. Brown tends to sit on the hair strand and therefore washes out quickly.

If you are not short of money, then you can go to a good salon and have a colour correction.

Failing that, try washing your hair with washing up liquid (sounds strange, but it worked for me) ALWAYS condition your hair if you do this. That will strip the colour and bring it back to your natural shade. This may take quite a few washes before you see a change.

If you wish to dye over the red, you will need to take your hair colour a couple of shades darker to cover the red. Even then, the red is likely to show through in natural light.

Brown coloring in blonde hair is called low lighting.

This is totally off subject but came to mind because of something you mentioned.....

Just curious...why can't you cut your hair just because you're in a wedding? Is the bride requiring all girls to have long hair?? That's just plain ridiculous. When I was young and everyone was starting to get married, one of my friends DEMANDED that all of her bridesmaids look IDENTICAL. We of course all were wearing the same dress and shoes, which is typical BUT she insisted that everyone color their hair the same color, she wanted girls with shorter hair to grow their hair out and the girls with longer hair were to cut their hair the length of the shorter haired girls. She even went so far as to tell everyone they had to buy colored contacts so our eyes were the same color. I told her to go buy some robots or dolls to stand up for her at her wedding because I certainly wasn't going to change my appearance for a wedding!

I declined the invitation to be in the wedding nor did I even go to the wedding after all of that. Some girls get "Bride" CRAZY.

I have no pics ....but you should ask for color to be used as opposed to bleach for your high-lights, and ask to see a color chart to do your low-lights...Make sure you and your hair dresser are on the same page as far as what you expect from him or her and what you don't like in a hair color and all should go fine....My first question when I am doing a color is 'What don't you like?' This tells me what to stay away from while mixing your colors.

It won't go back green! Just buy a colourant close to your natural colour that is permanent......trust me there is NO way that your hair will go green.....sometimes chlorine will send blonde hair green if there is too much in the swimming pool but that is a RARE thing!!!

trust me, your hair will not go green. but what u will have to do is gradually dye it back to brown. ie get brown highlights to cover up the blonde, but not all at once, or else there is a chance that it wont look natural!

you really should go to the salon for a colour correction as your hair CAN turn a greenish shade if you dye it yourself. you should just get a hairdresser to break the colour up with some different shades of blonde ie. caramel, honey and cream shades and ask them to add a few subtle low lights. believe me i've had a big hair disaster where my hair ended up an eminem shade of blonde! when its really blonde you're not going to be able to cover it with dye, they're going to have to take the colour out before adding a darker colour! trust me, you need to get to a salon or they'll be more tears! good luck!

If you use any ash brown on blonde hair it will turn green.

Here's the logic: Your hair is blonde(yellow)

Light Ash Brown hair color that has a (blue/violet)

base.

Yellow %26amp; Blue=Green

To avoid green hair you absolutely need to use a warm (red) base hair color. It doesn't have to be a scarlet red, but a nice warm light brown. Look for that key word "warm". I am a professional Cometologist, and excell when it comes to correcting hair color.

The next time you can pretty much choose the color you really want, because the warm tone(s), will have been absorbed and good to go for you next application of hair color.

This should help you get a grip on how Color works.

get some pre-pigment from hole-salers copper, its like a mousse just pop that on followed by your chosen colour. you have no pigment in your hair so the worm tones need putting back in i.e your red tones. this should prevent your hair going green.a little tip if your hair does go green put tomato source on it the acid in it removes it i hope you get it sorted. x x

Although it also depends on your skin tone, you might want to try the browns/the brownish reds..... that seems to be the best that works for me, but then again i do have a tan skin. Find you a toner with a base color of purple. Purple diverts the yellow color, same as red diverts the greens, or a green base diverts the left over red color in hair.

Use a 20 vol. developer with the color toner you've picked, put it on your hair and then watch it. You DO NOT have to follow the directions on the timing. Once it starts to turn, and looks like the color is grabbing, find a piece of hair to rinse the toner off of, and look at the color. If it looks right, then rinse, wash and move on. If it doesn't look right, then leave it on for a few minutes.

But let me give you a hint also! IF your hair is bleached heavily...and is in BAD shape...when you put a toner on your head, its can possibly pick up the base color in the toner, therefore giving your hair a purple haze to it. SO BE VERY CAREFUL with it!!!! Thats why you really need a professional if you are not used to doing your own hair, or someone to help you with it....

It can, and may grab the base color of the toner used, so...just remember this when you are doing your hair. That means...you do not have to leave it sitting on your hair for the entire amount of time,....just when it looks ready!

There is a product called Fancy Full, it's by Revlon and it's been around for years. (it's in a gray and pink bottle, usually on the bottom shelf with hair products) It's a liquid you squirt onto your hair after shampooing and conditioning. It's basically a toner that you use each time you wash your hair until the brassiness is gone. If you get Fancy Full, be careful not to get it on anything but your hair b/c it stains. You could also go to a beauty supply store and get some toner. Just tell the clerk you want a toner to take away the brassiness. ALSO, I LOVE John Frieda Sheer Blonde products. If you haven't tried them already, you must! It really brings out shine and rids your hair of brassiness! Sheer Blonde takes a few washes to really notice a big difference.

WAIT one second....Do not under any circumstances color your hair red from a box over blonde highlights. I'm a hairstylist...And the reason why you can't, is because over the counter hair colors don't know if you are trying to lift through your natural color, or just deposit color over an old highlite. All store brands use a 20 vol minimum developer to open up the cuticle... If you are just depositing color you need to use 10Vol, at min..5 if you have it. Red is the hardest color to get to stay in your hair because of the way the molecules stick together... I promise if you buy a box of red color and color your old highlites within 2 weeks, your hair is just going to be orange. And if you just replace it, your further damaging your hair. If you just had it done...you can cover it up...But let me ask you why? Did you do the color yourself? Or did someone else do it? If you did it yourself and lets say its not blonde but kind of yellow...You can fix that by having a hairstilist run a toner over it... And if you paid for it and aren't happy, you just return to the salon...And express why not.. They would be happy to fix it for you. However if its just your not likeing how you look in blonde...They will definitly charge you to change the overall color..

Here's the deal. Using color to highlight just a couple shades lighter brown then your natural black is not going to cause some outrageous damage... but it's also not going to show up very well. Natural black has a way of hanging in there and not going enough shades lighter.

That being said, all color requires maintenance. If you leave it alone until it grows out it will begin to "oxidize". If you remember the commercials about OxyClean, then you will understand that oxygen in high doses will cause a "bleaching" effect. NO the color won't bleach your hair, but it will fade and fade and fade if left unmaintained and give the appearance eventually that you lightened your hair.

the ONLY way you can do this is via bleach (no haircolour on earth can lighten black hair) most otc colours are formulated for naturally blonde hair so all this will do is to proceed to make you darker so you will need to bleach. i suggest you do a strand test first to see how long you need to leave the bleach on for before it reaches the desired shade, some SO-CALLED hairdressers really don't know what they are talking about and actually aren't thoroughly trained in the chemistry side of hair. you may end up with an undesired shade though after bleaching which will then require a light brown toner to take you to the shade you are after (i say light brown because once hair is bleached it tends to become more porous as you are stripping out the natural pigment in the hair shaft so will "grab" onto colour making it turn out 2 shades darker so remember to choose a colour 2 shades lighter than the shade you require. it is a pain but this is truly the ONLY way to lighten black hair.

Yes we can take you back to your natural color. To do so would involve lightening it first with bleach. Color does not lift color! Unless you have very strong hair, my suggestion to you would be go heavier on your hightlights so your all over hair color is lighter, folowed by toning some of the highlighted hair with a darker blond that is closer to your natural level. The result would be you have some lighter blonde streaks, with streaks of a darker blond, mixed with the med brown color you started with.... Very pretty.

I have a prominent nose, large eyes, full but subtle lips. I'm a cross between Jennifer Lopez (face shape) and Gloria Estefan (nose), if you can picture that! I'm 5'2 and in shape. I work out at the gym daily so need a style that is easy to manage. My hair is currently about 2 inches below shoulders in layers. I would love to let it grow some more or keep the current length. White/yellow toned skin, light in winter tans easily in summer.

Hair falling out/breaking/tangling after highlights -- products??

I've been growing my dark brown (virgin) hair super long for the last couple of years. A few weeks ago I decided to get blonde highlights, and although I ended up being pleased with the light blonde colour, I'm very dissatisfied with the condition of my hair. After every wash it is nearly impossible to detangle and comb through...and it's falling out/breaking off constantly. I'm not sure what went wrong because I used to dye my hair years ago and I've never experienced such damage from one dye job. I also don't blow dry or use any heat on my hair. The salon where I got it done told me they don't use bleach in their dyes (unless a person requests it), so I'm not sure what is causing all the breakage, or why I'm losing more and more hair by the minute.

If someone could shed some light on this issue or perhaps recommend some sort of product to get my hair looking healthy again, I'd really appreciate it.

Sounds like they used bleach. I dye my hair blonde and it always breaks and everything. My advice is just to use a color-protecting shampoo and conditioner because they protect your hair too. Try Dumb Blonde by bedhead. I condition with that once a week and daily I use herbal essences color me happy. Good Luck.

The highlights will be a lighter shade. You can go to a beauty supply store %26amp; buy a no colour filler- should cost about 4 bucks. This will allow the highlights to take the same lever of color as the rest of your hair.

That said, you'd be nuts to color your hair black if its blonde. Its the hardest color to get out of your hair. Think this thru before you do it- it you dont love the results you're looking at spending a fortune for salon color correction.

Well bleach out hair has trouble holding color in .It will probubly be lighter and not hold the color in the areas where the bleach was.Just remember if you go black its imposible to change your mind after words .If you changed your mind after you would have to strip it and it would end up fried so make sure that your positive before you do it.

Haircuts at anywhere decent in my area generally run $30-40, unless of course you're just talking trimming the split ends off which would be cheaper. Updos, depending on the length of your hair anywhere from $20-60 - really long or shorter hair tends to be pricier, the mid-length cuts that are fairly popular just flip right up and so are cheaper. Plus tipping your beautician. I've never had any experience with dye or highlights, so I've no idea. If your hair's not been colour-treated, though, you could try putting lemon juice through and then be out in the sun for a day, always worked beautifully for my sister who likes to have blond highlights showing in her hair. (Mine's red, so I'm sort of stuck with it.)

don't do it all at once. updo's don't hold in freshly shampooed hair. that's why we tell you to shampoo the day before prom and wear a button up shirt to get your hair done.

hilites and cut around 150. and an updo between 50 %26amp; 100.

or you could get partial highlites and cut the day before prom - 50 to 75. then don't shampoo or anything and get updo done next day.

well i have brown hair and i usually get two colors foiled into my hair and i use blonde and caramel (more like the color of a penny), and it looks good in my hair or at least ive had alot of compliments on it.

If you want highlights in any red then I would not do this at home! Red bleeds and it bleeds bad! You may want to go see a professional the highlights alone would likely cost around $50 but if you do them at home alone then there is a really good chance you will end up with pink highlights.

get red streaks on black hair! they have hair extensions that you glue to your natural hair at the roots. Since you only want 3 or 4, this is definitely the way to go because they last a few months and you wash your hair and treat the hair as your own. Hair falling out/breaking/tangling after highlights -- products??

I've been growing my dark brown (virgin) hair super long for the last couple of years. A few weeks ago I decided to get blonde highlights, and although I ended up being pleased with the light blonde colour, I'm very dissatisfied with the condition of my hair. After every wash it is nearly impossible to detangle and comb through...and it's falling out/breaking off constantly. I'm not sure what went wrong because I used to dye my hair years ago and I've never experienced such damage from one dye job. I also don't blow dry or use any heat on my hair. The salon where I got it done told me they don't use bleach in their dyes (unless a person requests it), so I'm not sure what is causing all the breakage, or why I'm losing more and more hair by the minute.

If someone could shed some light on this issue or perhaps recommend some sort of product to get my hair looking healthy again, I'd really appreciate it.

Sounds like they used bleach. I dye my hair blonde and it always breaks and everything. My advice is just to use a color-protecting shampoo and conditioner because they protect your hair too. Try Dumb Blonde by bedhead. I condition with that once a week and daily I use herbal essences color me happy. Good Luck.

Yes we can take you back to your natural color. To do so would involve lightening it first with bleach. Color does not lift color! Unless you have very strong hair, my suggestion to you would be go heavier on your hightlights so your all over hair color is lighter, folowed by toning some of the highlighted hair with a darker blond that is closer to your natural level. The result would be you have some lighter blonde streaks, with streaks of a darker blond, mixed with the med brown color you started with.... Very pretty.

I want to know if I can just color over all of my hair with complementing color and just leave things solid. That happens when u don't leave it on long enough, or perhaps the product isn't strong enough for your dark hair.

I have been colouring my own hair for over 20 years - so please take my advice.

First of all you need to buy a shampoo like "Shimmer Lights" - its meant to reduce the brassiness. After a week of using it -( leave it on for as long as u shower - so it can penetrate) the brassiness will be gone. You can then alternate shampoos but use it to keep the brassiness from coming back.

Don't let the other responses scare you from at home hair colouring. Salons screw up all the time too.

If you need to look gorgeous ASAP then go ahead and colour all over with a semi-permanent or permanent colour that has ASH as the colour - very ash blonde is perfect.

I would never recommend coloring your hair yourself....always use a professional....that way you pay for what you get....

You have quite a bit of red in your hair. You need an Ash color to bring it back to a normal appearance. You need to see a professional to get that done.

Also, you have to invest in some serious conditioners for your oxidized and damaged hair so that it won't go frizzy on you on the top layer.

Get a layered cut as it grows out until your mistake is gone.

Purple neutralizes orange.

Don't dye your hair purple.

Go to a beauty supply store and get a shampoo with purple tones in it(There's one that has old people on the front and it says its for white hair or bleached hair). This WILL NOT dye your hair, so don't worry. It will however get rid of some of, if not all of the orange.

Another option is to buy a packet or two of Quick Blue bleach as well as a 40 volume toner.

Mix the two until they are the consistancy of chocolate mousse, and put it on the orange strands up to about a quarter inch from your roots. Leave it on about 10 - 15 minutes and then cover the rest up to your roots and leave it on another five minutes or so.

This is tricky, so if you feel even a bit hesitant, don't do it.

I hate to say it, but you'll either have to forget the highlights and dye your hair back to your original color, or shell out about $70 for a professional to fix it for you.

If you want to over-dye into solid color, choose one level darker than your choice. They all sound wicked pretty but if you dont want to look punk I would steer away from the bottom half or the tips... Thats my favorite but it really does have an edgy kind of punk look to it. So if you want something that looks something other than punk I would go for the highlighted look... Layers or long straight would be cute.

Although it also depends on your skin tone, you might want to try the browns/the brownish reds..... that seems to be the best that works for me, but then again i do have a tan skin.
