In the past attempts to achieve this look have always resulted in orangey/ red hues which do not look good on my skin tone. Please help!

u need to get your hair bleached..if i were you i wouldn't do it myself or let a friend have a go...(experience)....go see a proffessional about it, they will give you the best advice and do the best job.

There are GREAT products available now that give you like 3D color... you don't highlight the hair like before, you color the whole head and it's got these hues that make lighter highlights, and it's really cool, I use L'oreal Feria (with triple the highlights! their words, not mine) because I'm worth it.. but anything that says it's multi tonal, or dual tone will accomplish the same type thing. Good luck (try it on a sample underneath your hair first to see if you like it)

With beauty, everything is possible. The best thing to do is go to a professional. Using hair bleach is very harsh. If u can't afford professional work, then just go into a salon and ask. Dye jobs are quite expensive. You could even buy a highlighting kit from Sally's Beauty Supply.
