Color treated/highlighted hair, can I switch to home hair dye safely?

I have blonde highlights and fairly damaged hair. I would like to color at home since my hair grows so fast and I am not rich but I'm afraid of turning it brassy or green. Is there a safe way to switch from salon treated to home treated hair color?

Test it with a temporary dye first like natural instincs, i have red hair with lighlights and im the same as you, it grows so fast and i cant afford it so i tried that dye and luv it, lasts 28 shampoos so if you decide to keep your natural color later you can. its great i live by it.

If the high lights are to much for you to keep up with, get rid of them. Its not good to use hair color that you can buy in a grocery store(box color). they are called metalic dyes- Box color strips your hair of everything and then deposits color into your cuticle. causing the cuticle tons of stress (once your cuticle is blown it will never allow your hair to be colored a darker color, you could only color your hair a lighter color and ultimatly kill your hair and need a hair cut) If you are going to color your hair at home go to a sally beauty supply or something like that where you have to buy the color and a developer. they will help you there, but if you want to get rid of your highlights and make your hair darker all you need is a 10 or 20 volume developer. if you want to lighten your hair you can use a 30 or 40. high light are hard to alone unless you use a cap. and if your hair is thick and long this will take forever... also they have toners. if your hair gets to much of a brassy tone use a blue violet toner.. I really hope i didnt confuse you and that this helps.

find the shade at the store that best match your highlights, you may need to just do the roots so you dont do any more damage, also you may need to leave in the longest time suggested. they sell highlighting kits that just brush on where you want the highlights.

when converting from a professional to at home hair care, usually you will have difficulty applying the color. If you are attempting hi lights at home, your only choice is a cap. That's hard too. You will probobly get 'bleed' marks, which means color flowed thru the holes in the cap which give you 'leopard' looking spots. And you may end up turning your hair orange, or green, like you said.
